John the Saxon

A monk in a monastery in France, he was invited to go to England by King Alfred the Great and to assist in the restoration of the Christian faith in the wake of the severe and destructive invasions by the Danes.

Appointed abbot of Athelingay by Alfred, John served with vigor and distinction until his murder one night by two French monks under his care in A.D. 895.
