ALMIGHTY and merciful God, of whose only gift it cometh that thy faithful people do unto thee true and laudable service; Grant, we beseech thee, that we may so faithfully serve thee in this life, that we fail not finally to attain thy heavenly promises; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Lord. Thank you for posting these! A question: On Sundays, when three sets of propers are given, what has been the standard way of selecting from these? Was this a sort of A-B-C three-year lectionary, so this year the middle set would be used? Or were (are) there other ways of deciding?

Hi Scott,

The short answer is "ministers choice" with a stipulation.

In the 1928 BCP on pages vii - viii (after the Preface and before the tables) there is a section titled Concerning the Service of the Church and there is a sub-section the Use of the Psalter and the Lectionary, in the fifth paragraph is the rule - "The Psalms and Lessons printed on the same line are intended to be used together. At any service for which more than one such set of Psalms and Lessons are appointed, the choice thereof is at the discretion of the Minister."

Thanks for dropping by
