St. Cyprian's Prayer

A Prayer for Prisoners and Corrections Officers (St. Cyprian)

Most gracious Father, bless with Thy special care all penitentiaries and homes of refuge. Look with pity upon those who are housed there. Guide and protect those who have returned to the world. Grant all of them true contrition for past sins, and strengthen them in their good resolutions. Lead them along from grace to grace so that by the help of the Holy Ghost they may persevere in the ways of obedience and humility, and in the struggle against evil thoughts and desires. Grant the Holy Spirit to those engaged in teaching and training them, that they might have a right judgment with respect to those entrusted to them. May they labor for love of Thee with deep humility and singleness of purpose, purity of heart and life, and true zeal for Thy glory and the salvation of souls. Give them faith and love to sustain them in disappointment, love and patience toward those under them, and in Thine own good time crown their work with an eternal recompense. This we ask in the name of Thine only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Prayer for the Day

During the month of July I have added some prayers from the BCP to my recitation of the Daily Offices.

The prayers are for our nation and for our people with the intent of asking for God's help in restoring our national character of faith, industry, charity, of manners and self-sufficiency, to free us from the grip of sin that tightens about us and the lust for worldly possessions that drives us in this age.

Lord Have Mercy.

For a Blessing on the Families of the Land.

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who settest the solitary in families; We commend to thy continual care the homes in which thy people dwell. Put far from them, we beseech thee, every root of bitterness, the desire of vain-glory, and the pride of life. Fill them with faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness. Knit together in constant affection those who, in holy wedlock, have been made one flesh; turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to the fathers; and so enkindle fervent charity among us all, that we be evermore kindly affectioned with brotherly love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for the Day

As I ponder the future of our nation and our people, this prayer keeps popping back into my head. It also reminds me of how far down we have brought ourselves in this post-modern era and seem to be abandoning not only God, but our heritage, our culture and our posterity.

Lord have mercy upon us.

For Our Country.

ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us this good land for
our heritage; We humbly beseech thee that we may
always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favour and
glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honourable industry,
sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence,
discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogancy, and from
every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one
united people the multitudes brought hither out of many
kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those
to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government,
that there may be justice and peace at home, and that,
through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise
among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity,
fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble,
suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
